Controlled Atmosphere Systems

Fresh fruit and vegetables continue to respire after harvest, consuming oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Controlled atmosphere storage is designed to slow these metabolic processes by maintaining carefully controlled oxygen, carbon dioxide, temperature and other storage conditions.

Controlled atmosphere systems can help extend storage life and preserve product quality when the storage parameters are correctly selected for the specific commodity and variety.

System configurations may include nitrogen generation, carbon dioxide removal, oxygen and carbon dioxide analysis, ethylene management and monitoring equipment.

For suitable products and applications, dynamic controlled atmosphere storage can operate at very low oxygen concentrations. The required setpoints must be determined according to the product, variety, storage conditions and selected control technology.
